This is part of the "Barbie" series, where the glamorous Barbie of childhood observes my adult reality and then dramatizes the events. In this piece, Barbie was up too late working. She is seeking just enough caffeine to help her get through the day! Her reflection in the coffee is a nod back to my college days, when I painted a coffee-reflected self-portrait, and when all-nighters were too common.

This still life painting was done en Plein air, meaning it was created from direct observation (as opposed to from a photo or from imagination).

l painted it using iPad, iPencil, and a digital drawing + painting app called Fresco, which applies my marks as if I were using traditional painter's tools. By ordering a print of this, you are given a role, in a sense, in creating the art, as it is you who gets to execute the final step of the process, which is giving the digital rendering a chance to manifest into the physical world in the way you choose (“Happy birthday, Barbie!”).
