Since I have been painting, I have called myself a "farming artist' because when I am not painting, I am managing out little New England hobby farm. ,My two jobs often overlap-- the flowers, fruit, horses and hens that we raise are frequently the subjects of my paintings.
During growing seasons, I like to end my workday with a stroll through the gardens to see what new inspiration and lessons I can find there. 2022 was challenging for on the farm, and for better or worse, one of our best "crops" was a volunteer field of Black-eyed Susans, which grew spectacularly between the stones of our garden walkways. I don't know what the lesson is held by this phenomenon. But I have preserved this gorgeous family of flowers by painting their portrait. When winter comes, I can recall these surprise beauties and contemplate their message. What lesson do these wonders of tenacity have to share?
